pickup trucks are as common as cars as an everyday passenger vehicle these days, but they were originally designed for work. Stronger and heavier than a car, trucks haul tools and materials for almost any job, while being small enough to stay economical. As they became more popular, the average pickup truck became more comfortable and easy to drive. Serious work trucks began to focus on adapting to specific jobs.
So, what makes it a Service Utility Truck? - Typically, it has to have plenty of power and enough room to carry the intended load. However, there are plenty of smaller vehicles that fit the classification. The only consistent factor is that it is a truck or van that has been designed, built or modified to be used for doing a particular job or service. Most service utility trucks begin with the same basic parts as any other truck. The engine, chassis and drive train are usually all the same. Most of the differences are in the cargo area, and the combinations of options is numerous.
What are they used for? - There are too many different uses for service utility trucks to list them all, but we can put them into 3 basic groups based on the type of load they are designed to carry.
The title "Service utility truck", can be used to describe many vehicles, but the most common description would be the third. Most jobs have some kind of maintenance department that needs to have mobile repair equipment.
