In cold climates, heated leachate lines and protected drain valves prevent freeze damage, preserving gasket life and structural seams. Weather sealed harnesses with Deutsch connectors, stainless hardware in splash zones, and undercoating on frame and crossmembers extend service life.

Tare weight drives legal payload and route economics, so balance material choices and options carefully. Stainless sections increase durability in wet routes, aluminum ladders, toolboxes, and tank guards trim pounds without compromising impact zones, and Type 4 CNG tanks reduce CNG weight but affect mounting height and center of gravity. Specify a chassis that matches the body, typically an Allison automatic with PTO for continuous pack cycles, axle ratios suited to constant start stop, and 20k steer with 40k to 46k rears; add steerable lift axles or tags where bridge or local weight rules require it. Choose suspensions proven in refuse duty, such as rubber block or heavy vocational air with reinforced torque rods, and consider on board scales and TPMS to control overload risk and tire wear.
