About International Asphalt - Hot Oil Trucks

International asphalt hot oil trucks are purpose built to heat, circulate, and apply asphalt binders or tack at precise temperatures. Bodies are typically paired to International HV or legacy WorkStar and 7000 series chassis with PTO ready transmissions and clean back of cab packaging, which simplifies burner, pump, and hydraulic installs. Tank capacities commonly range from 1,000 to 4,000 gallons, with hot oil circulation through coils or jackets to keep product uniform, and spray systems that can be manual or fully rate controlled for consistent coverage.

Thermal integrity is the difference between a productive day and downtime. Look for insulation thickness in the 2 to 4 inch range with tight seam aluminum jacketing, insulated valve boxes, and heat traced lines and spray bars so nozzles stay open in cold starts. Diesel fired burners in the 300,000 to 700,000 BTU class, single or dual, shorten heat up times and reduce idle hours; efficient hot oil circuits and recirculation manifolds limit stratification and cut fuel consumption. Accurate product temperature sensors and in cab controls help maintain viscosity, which protects pumps and yields clean spray patterns.

Floor strength and mounting matter because tanks concentrate weight on saddles and platforms carry operators and hose reels. International frames offer high RBM rails and body builder friendly layouts, and a properly installed body will use reinforced crossmembers, spreader plates, and outriggers that distribute loads without flex. Rear work platforms benefit from 3/16 to 1/4 inch treadplate with skid protection and stout handrails, and a rigid spray bar mount prevents vibration that can fatigue plumbing. Tare weight is a balancing act, steel tanks and stainless plumbing raise weight but add durability, while aluminum jacketing, aluminum fenders, and hydraulic drive components spec’d for the duty cycle can trim pounds and preserve payload. Axle selection, wheelbase, and lift axles should be set for legal loading on the steer and drives, with air suspensions tuned to keep spray bar height consistent.

Corrosion resistance is critical around heat, water, and chemicals. Stainless or epoxy lined tanks handle emulsions better, stainless spray bars, valves, and quick disconnects resist acidic wash downs, and powder coated subframes with sealed harnesses slow rust caused by overspray and deicer. Viking style jacketed asphalt gear pumps or rotary lobe pumps with hydraulic drives are common, and inline strainers with coarse and fine screens protect nozzles. Allison RDS transmissions with hot shift PTOs simplify engagement, and International Diamond Logic integration can add safety interlocks, for example PTO only with park brake set and burner lockout unless product is circulating. Specify reliable flame safeguards, calibrated thermocouples, emergency stops, and compliant lighting and fenders to keep the truck safe and road legal, then keep it that way with routine flushing, filter service, and seasonal burner maintenance.
