Trailmobile History

Trailmobile as it's known today, Trailmobile Canada Limited, is an innovative new company. The name has been used in the past by several companies. The company was originally founded in 1835 by Daniel Sechler, a carriage apprentice in Pennsylvania. Sechler opened his carriage shop in 1839 and moved west. The company was incorporated in 1879 under the name Sechler and Company. They were among the largest producers of horse-drawn vehicles in the world. An employee of Sechler company, John Endebrock, changed the direction of Sechler's operations around 1910. He spent years designing and testing a vehicle that could be pulled by a car.

Endebrock introduced the trailer to the world in 1915. The name "Trailmobile" was chosen for the vehicle because it was designed to trail behind an automobile. The company soon changed its name to The Trailmobile Company. Endebrock developed a jaw that coupled with a locking device in 1919. He patented his design, which differs very little from modern fifth wheel mechanisms.

About 40,000 Trailmobile units were manufactured for use during World War II. These units included mobile machine record trailers, vans, tank retrievers, M-5 bomb carriers and platform trailers. The Trailmobile Company was acquired in 1951 by Pullman Incorporated. The company was first operated as a subsidiary and later became a division of Pullman. It was later purchased by an entrepreneur from Canada and the company became Trailmobile Canada Limited.
