The company that became Kenworth Trucks began in 1912 as an auto dealership called "Gerlinger Motor Car Works". Owned by two brothers, George and Louis Gerlinger, the dealership soon became a truck manufacturer. The fledgling company quickly outgrew its digs in Portland, Oregon.
After relocating to Tacoma, Washington, the Gerlingers accepted an offer from two local businessmen to buy their operation. Those two men were Frederick Kent and Edgar K. Worthington. By the mid-1920s, the company name was changed to "Kenworth" and this popular truck brand was born.
Today, Kenworth continues to produce dependable trucks in Washington state. The manufacturer's "T" line of trucks is its flagship.
Models like the T880 offer many custom options. Buyers can choose to have a new T880 fitted with a Cummins or Paccar engine, and they have a choice between a manual or automatic transmission. Other options available on the T880 include an engine brake, cruise control, a roll-off hoist and locking rear wheels. This is a great, versatile rig.
A close relative of the T880 is the T800. This Kenworth model boasts the Airglide 400 rear-suspension setup. It also features a Cummins engine that delivers 450 horsepower, and it comes with a transmission manufactured by Eaton Fuller. This model carries a conventional cab, or it can be ordered with a sleeper cab.
Drivers love Kenworth's T700, which is a great hauler with available horsepower as high 450. This machine features a raised roof, and it offers an available sleeper cab. With an Airglide 400 suspension and a Cummins power source, the T700 has all the tools a professional trucker needs for long hauls.
Kenworth's T680 can be bought with a day cab or a sleeper cab, and its engine options offer up to 450 horsepower. With a 220-gallon fuel tank, this rig is ready for long hauls.
The T660 is a fuel-efficient choice with a smaller fuel tank than its brethren. This tractor is perfect for day-hauling truckers who like to work in a small region and sleep at home.
Truckers who need rigs built with a cab and chassis should take a look at Kenworth's T270. This truck comes equipped with a day cab built on a long chassis that can be fitted with a variety pieces that make sense for builders, local movers, mining companies and a range of other companies. With 225 horsepower from a Paccar engine, this rig can handle all sorts of jobs.
