History of Hino Trucks

Hino Trucks began in 1910 as part of the Tokyo Gas Industry Company. The company grew and went through many changes over the next 30 years. In 1942, Hino Heavy Industry Co. Ltd was spun away from their parent company. Hino manufactured vehicles for the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. They stopped producing large engines for marine applications after the war ended. Hino Heavy Industry also dropped the word heavy from their name at this time. They chose to concentrate on buses and heavy-duty semi tractors. The company was named for the Japanese city in which their headquarters was located.

Hino Industry Co. Ltd changed their name again in 1948, becoming Hino Diesel Industry Co., Ltd. They believed that adding the world diesel would help with marketing their trucks and buses to customers. The heavy-duty Hino TH10 was introduced into the Japanese market in 1950. It was much larger than all of the Japanese trucks that were on the road during that time. Hino is now the third largest manufacturer of trucks in the world.
