Great Dane began manufacturing trailers as the Savannah Blowpipe Company in Savannah, Georgia. By 1912 they had begun to manufacture steel plate and light structural steel products. This continued until 1931, when The Savannah Blowpipe Company incorporated as The Steel Products Company. They began to manufacture trailers that were designed to attach to trucks and haul freight. The first trailers they manufactured were flatbeds, but tanker trailers were later added. The company began to manufacture a lightweight steel trailer in 1938, which became their principal product.
The company began manufacturing reefer trailers in the 1940s and changed their name to Great Dane Trailers, Inc. in 1959. The company merged with Pines Trailer in 1997 and created the largest trailer company in the world, Great Dane Limited Partnership. The company later purchased manufacturing facilities from Strick's Eastern Van and Trailmobile.

Their Everest TL reefer trailer is the lightest in the industry, and their Champion CP dry vans are designed to allow for the greatest possible payload. Great Dane trailers are available in many lengths, with many door configurations. These trailers can also be customized to meet the needs of your customers. The features and amenities available on Great Dane trailers depend on the trailer type and other factors.
