Flatbed trucks have been on the road and in the fields since the first Model T hit the market. Farmers commonly removed the back of the carriage and replaced it with a simple flatbed so they could use it to haul goods and equipment. Flatbed trucks also have military applications. In fact, Ford built 1.5 ton flatbed pickups as the standard truck for the United States Army in 1944.

Flatbed trucks are generally used to haul loads that do not require special handling. They are great for hauling anything with odd dimensions and are commonly used to haul construction equipment. Most flatbeds are constructed of steel and aluminum. Some of them are equipped with wooden decks, while others have decks made of the same metal as the rest of the body. Tarps are often used in conjunction with flatbed trucks to keep the loads dry and protected from dirt and outdoor elements. Most flatbed trucks are equipped with stake pockets and some have a gooseneck hitch mounted in the bed for greater flexibility when hauling equipment.

Although flatbed trucks are designed more for function than comfort, the interior has come a long way since the Model T days. Flatbed trucks are now available in crew cab styles, which means more room for passengers and gear. Some of the trucks also have leather seats, upgraded exterior lighting systems, keyless entry, engine block heaters and other features that make driving the truck more enjoyable.

Other amenities that may be available in flatbed trucks include:

  • Power heated mirrors
  • CB radios
  • USB ports
  • Satellite radio
  • Armrests with cupholders
  • Bluetooth
  • Trailer brake control
  • Fog lamps
  • Full size spare tire
