A double drop gets its name because there is a drop in deck height at the front of the trailer and another drop in deck height just before the rear axles. These drops allow for the deck to be very low to the ground. A double drop trailer can generally haul loads that don't exceed 12 feet in height without a special permit.

Some double drop trailers have fixed necks, while others have removable necks. Double drop trailers with fixed necks are typically loaded with freight from either side of the trailer, using a forklift. The freight may also be loaded onto the trailer by a crane, setting it down from the top. The amount of freight they can haul legally is around 35,000 pounds.

Double drop trailers with removable necks are known as RGN. They are usually used to haul equipment with wheels or tracks that can be driven directly onto the deck of the trailer. This includes forklifts, cranes, and agricultural combines. A double drop RGN trailer may also be called a detach because of the ability for the gooseneck to detach from the rest of the trailer.

Most double drop trailer are manufactured from aluminum, steel, or a combination of the two. They entire trailer length is generally between 48 feet and 53 feet and the trailer width is usually between 96 inches and 102 inches. The deck length is often shorter than other types of flatbed trailers because of the drops. Extendable double drops are available to increase the deck length substantially.

Special features found on some double drop trailers include:

  • Ramps
  • Lift axle
  • Tool box
  • D Rings
  • Tarping systems
  • Air ride suspension
  • LED lighting
