More About Refrigerated Trucks

These listings include dimensions, make, location, price, axle rating, door type and more. Using the links at the bottom of the listing, you can obtain a shipping quote, calculate payments and more.

The first trucks that successfully used mechanical refrigeration to keep goods frozen during transportation were ice cream trucks. They pioneered the cooling technology around 1925. Before mechanical cooling was available, truckers often kept the goods they were hauling cold during transportation using regular ice or dry ice. Dry ice is still used in some refrigerated trucks today.

Standard features in the cab of a refrigerated truck are similar to the features found in modern semi tractors. These include air-ride seats, thick insulation, large windshields, CD players, cup holders and more. Some of these trucks include a refrigeration unit already installed, while others are ready for the refrigeration unit to be added so that the truck will be ready for hauling loads.

Several configurations of refrigerated trucks are available. Some of these trucks have doors only on the back, while other have door on one or both sides of the refrigerated area. More doors make it easier to unload refrigerated goods from the truck, but heat can also enter the compartment when doors are opened, making the refrigeration unit work harder. Swinging doors and roll-up doors are available. Some have ramps or liftgates included, while others have step bumpers. Fiberglass and aluminum are the most common materials used to construct refrigerated trucks, and many of the refrigerated compartments have interior walls made of glassboard.

Features of the reefer unit and refrigerated compartment that many companies look for include:

  • Multiple compartments that can be kept a differing temperatures
  • Back-up power for the reefer unit
  • Fuel efficient reefer unit
  • Fastener-free sideliners
  • Interior lined with thermoplastic
  • Upgraded insulation

Additional features that drivers choose to make the cab more comfortable include:

  • Additional charging ports
  • Air conditioning
  • Heated Mirrors
  • Power locks and windows
  • Telescopic wheel
  • Ergonomic seats
  • Cruise control
